2 killed after a fiery tractor-trailer crash on a highway in Georgia

The McIntosh County Sheriff’s Office reports that two people died in a tractor-trailer crash on a highway in Georgia.
Crash investigators from the Georgia State Patrol (GSP) believe that the fiery collision between two big rig trucks happened at the McIntosh/Glynn County line on I-95 southbound near the Darien exit around 4:30 p.m. on Friday, December 9.
Based on eyewitness accounts, an unknown pickup truck heading north on the interstate forced a Peterbilt tractor-trailer toward the median. The tractor-trailer breached the median cable barrier and veered into the southbound lane crashing into a Volvo tractor-trailer.
The terrific crash separated the Volvo from its trailer, leading to a rollover. GSP said the driver of the Volvo managed to escape the cab before it caught fire.
Meanwhile, the Peterbilt tractor-trailer burst into flames as it stopped. All four southbound traffic lanes were blocked by the enormous vehicle.
Sadly, both occupants of the Peterbilt were killed. The two have been identified as Bereket Teweldemedhin, 42, and Angesom Abadi, 36, both from Harrisonburg, Virginia.
It was only possible to reopen one lane of traffic by 9 p.m., and the other three took much longer due to the huge amount of debris. Eventually, the 3 remaining lanes were reopened around 1.30 a.m. Damage caused by the fire will keep the right southbound lane closed until further notice.
GSP’s Special Collision Reconstruction Team is investigating the devastating collision.
We extend our deepest condolences to the families of Teweldemedhin and Abadi in their time of sorrow.
