In a heartbreaking accident reported by Georgia State Patrol, four people, among them three Chattooga high school football players, were killed after a car overturned in northwest Georgia on Sunday, October 30.
The GSP says an Audi lost control and flipped at 12:36 AM on Georgia 114 near Lyerly. The 2019 Audi RS5 veered off a curve, hit a private driveway, flipped over, and ended up upright.
Chattooga County Superintendent Jared Hosmer identified three of the victims as Chattooga High School students. Reports indicate that the driver and two passengers were pronounced dead on the scene. Two others were transported to a nearby hospital where one died and the sole survivor, a female passenger, remains in critical condition.
At this time, it is still not clear why the vehicle left the road, and troopers are reconstructing the accident and will release more details as they become available.
The coroner’s office released the names of the victims as 14-year-old Tydraedius Dozier, 15-year-old Xavier Gray, 16-year-old Zantivian Brown, and the driver as 54-year-old Otis Kennard Jr.
In a statement on social media, the school’s football team wrote, “Heartbroken is the only word that comes to mind as we have lost 3 of our own,” please pray for the families and friends.”
It is with deep sorrow that we send our sympathies and condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in this terrible tragedy.
A car crash in Georgia causes terrible tragedy
Chattooga high school students’ crash is an ugly reminder of the deadly consequences of negligent driving. Unfortunately, drivers often act negligently, leading to fatal accidents as a consequence of unsafe driving.
While Georgia ranks 8th when it comes to population, the state ranks fourth when it comes to fatal accidents. In 2020, 450 people died and 6,640 were injured in traffic accidents, according to the Georgian National Statistics Office.
Safe driving practices include identifying and avoiding:
- DUI – Driving while drinking or under the influence
- Driving while distracted – using a mobile phone, talking, texting, etc.
- Driving without a seatbelt
- Speeding dangerously
