Georgia semi-truck crash leaves a pedestrian dead in Cobb County!
Last updated Monday, December 12th, 2022
According to the Cobb County Police Department, a pedestrian was killed from injuries he sustained in a fatal Georgia semi-truck crash at an intersection in Marietta on Monday, December 5.
Marietta Police Department officials confirmed that a northbound white 2022 Ford F-250 Super Duty, driven by a 39-year-old man, knocked down a pedestrian as he tried to walk across the street on Austell Road near its intersection with Pat Mell Road around 6:45 p.m. Monday.
The Ford driver and a juvenile passenger suffered no injuries, police said. In the aftermath of the crash, the driver of the truck remained at the scene.
The pedestrian endured traumatic injuries and was transported to WellStar Kennestone Hospital, where he was tragically pronounced dead. Investigators later identified the victim as Derek Johnson, 32, from Marietta. Johnson was “outside of a marked crosswalk,” police said.
Firefighters and paramedics were called to the scene for assistance.
Long stretches of traffic were blocked on the roadway for quite some time until police cleared the scene, which caused delays for a while.
Investigation into the collision continues, and more details will be released as soon as possible.
We extend our deepest condolences to the Johnson family during this difficult time.

The death of a loved one leaves the mourning family struggling to make sense of it all. A reckless driver’s negligence and distraction leave the victim’s family devastated.
In recent years, pedestrian accidents in Georgia have unfortunately increased alarmingly – In 2021, it was reported that approximately 322 pedestrians were killed in fatal accidents throughout the state of Georgia.
Almost no driver causes a fatal accident intentionally, but the majority can be prevented by avoiding unsafe driving practices, including:
- DUI – driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs
- Distracted driving caused by a phone, music, or chatting with a passenger
- Not wearing a seatbelt while driving
- Driving too fast at intersections
