An unfortunate car accident in Georgia involving a police officer claimed the life of a man and injured a toddler.
Georgia State Patrol said that the fatal collision occurred around 5 AM on the 6800 block of Georgia Highway 85 near Roberts Drive. A Clayton County police officer was responding to a call with his emergency equipment activated when his patrol car collided with another vehicle on Friday, November 4.
Officials say that Cameron Pack, 24 was headed north in his patrol car when he spotted a blue Ford Fiesta turning left into a KFC nearby. In an attempt to avoid the car, the officer hit the passenger side and lost control of the vehicle. The police car fell into a nearby parking lot before hitting a building.
The driver of the Ford involved in the accident, identified as 21-year-old Kelvontae Zikel Banks, suffered serious injuries and was taken to the Grady Memorial Hospital, but he, sadly, did not recover from his injuries. A 2-year-old boy in the backseat of Banks’ Ford was taken to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston. At this point, we are not aware of his condition.
The police officer involved in the crash, Pack, has also been hospitalized with unknown injuries at Grady Memorial Hospital.
As a result of the crash, the Georgia State Patrol Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team closed the highway for investigation for gathering evidence in the case.
Banks was on his way to pick up his girlfriend from the KFC restaurant when the cars collided. His father was devastated as he recalled that she witnessed the tragic accident first-hand.
It is with heavy hearts that we extend our condolences to the Banks family during this time of tragedy. Our prayers go out as well to the toddler and the police officer in hopes of a speedy recovery.
