Teenager arrested for causing the death of a Grovetown man in a fatal hit-and-run accident in Georgia

In yet, another tragic but preventable hit-and-run accident in Georgia, a Columbia County man lost his life after he was struck by a car driven at recklessly high speeds by a teenager.
Major Steve Morris, Columbia County Sheriff, informed on Sunday that Corey McMurray, 18, of Evans, has been charged in connection with 26-year-old Christopher Herrin’s death.
Sheriff’s Office deputies confirmed that the accident took place at about 6:30 AM, October 24, on William Few Parkway at the intersection with Chastain Place. Herrin was struck by a speeding car – driven by McMurray – while walking along the side of the road.
The Sheriff said deputies were dispatched to the accident scene as soon as they were alerted. Initial investigations found that Herrin was walking east on William Few on the north shoulder while McMurray was driving west in his Kia Forte at a high speed.
As he tried to negotiate a curve just before Chastain Place, his car veered off the road and struck Herrin. Deputies reported that McMurray continued to drive on the shoulder and crashed into a culvert. They added that the driver then called 911, and said he hit something in the road.
McMurray faces charges of homicide by vehicle, failure to maintain lane, and driving too fast.
The Sheriff’s Office will provide updates as new information becomes available about the accident’s circumstances.
We extend our deepest condolences to the family of Christopher Herrin on their tragic loss. Our hearts go out to the teenager’s family as they bear the weight of a moment of reckless negligence.
A hit-and-run accident in Georgia is sadly, fairly common
Devastating accidents involving pedestrians occur often in Georgia and claim many lives every year. Across Georgia, pedestrian accidents killed over 300 innocent victims in 2021 alone.
It is absolutely vital that you, as a responsible driver, refuse unsafe driving practices, specifically:
- Driving while drunk
- Distracted by phone calls, music, or small talk while driving
- Not wearing a seatbelt while driving
- Speeding without consideration
A life lost to an unforeseen tragedy forces a family to suffer in silent pain without any fault of their own.
