The driver of an SUV dies in a fatal Georgia crash with a tanker truck

Last updated Friday, November 18th, 2022

Rome Police reports that in a shocking fatal Georgia crash, a black SUV plunged into oncoming traffic and struck a tanker truck at high speed.

Huge clouds of smoke rose after the tanker, carrying corn syrup, caught fire following the crash. The fire was extinguished before it could reach the SUV. The driver of the SUV was tragically killed while the truck driver escaped unhurt.

The slain driver was identified as Rebecca Madden, 70, by Polk County Coroner Norman Smith.

Reports indicate that the accident occurred on Turner McCall Boulevard near O’Neill Street at around 10 AM on November 14, Monday. The Boulevard was completely shut down following the incident

State troopers and Motor Carrier Compliance Division officers attended the scene to assist with traffic control and investigation. In response to the Rome Police Department’s request, the Georgia State Patrol Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team was also called in to investigate the horrific wreck.

A utility pole was damaged due to the impact of the crash, causing a power outage for more than an hour in portions of East Rome. As a result, traffic signals in the area were disrupted as well.

Our deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of Ms. Madden for their heartbreaking loss.

A fatal Georgia crash that could have been prevented

The majority of catastrophic car wrecks can be prevented if drivers simply follow basic safe driving practices. The simplest of safety precautions can minimize the risk of fatalities in accidents, including:

  • NEVER driving when drunk or under the influence of drugs
  • BEWARE of being distracted by a phone or music while driving
  • ALWAYS wearing a seatbelt while driving
  • NEVER speeding at intersections or on busy roads

The state of Georgia has a long history of tragic traffic accidents – it ranks fourth nationwide in terms of traffic fatalities in spite of being the 8th most populous state – 450 people died and 6,640 were injured in 4999 traffic accidents in 2020.
